At THE !N CROWD, we often say that we “meet people where they are.” But what does that really mean — and why is it so important?
In the work we do across the Sunshine Coast — supporting those impacted by homelessness, mental health challenges, disability, and trauma — we encounter people at all different stages of life. Some are just trying to survive another day. Others are ready to take steps toward something more. And many are somewhere in between.
No matter where someone is on that spectrum, we believe the first and most important thing we can do is meet them there.
Here’s why:
People who have experienced hardship often carry deep wounds — of abandonment, judgement, or failure. When we show up without expectations or conditions, we create a space where they can simply be. That kind of safety is rare — and essential.
No two stories are the same. Some people are navigating fresh grief. Others are battling addiction, housing instability, or isolation. We can’t walk someone else’s path for them — but we can walk with them, at their pace, with compassion and understanding.
Transformation doesn’t begin when someone “gets their life together.” It begins in the moment they feel connected. When we meet people in their present moment, we affirm their dignity and remind them they matter — exactly as they are.
There is no “us and them.” There’s only us. By approaching others with empathy rather than assumption, we dissolve the divide that separates people based on their challenges, and remind everyone that we’re all human — and all worthy of care.
Hope isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. For someone in crisis, hope might look like a hot meal, a clean shirt, or just someone who listens. By supporting people in their current reality, we help make hope feel real — something they can actually reach for.
Meeting someone where they are doesn’t mean we leave them there. It means we walk alongside them, gently encouraging them toward more — more connection, more healing, more hope.
This is the heart of THE !N CROWD.
Not to fix or rescue — but to stand beside, to uplift, and to believe in what’s possible.
Because every person deserves a hand to hold until they’re strong enough to walk on their own — and no one should go without.
