Why now is the time to stand together for those impacted by disability, mental health, and homelessness.
The Sunshine Coast has long been a place people dream of calling home. With its beautiful beaches, relaxed lifestyle, and close-knit communities, it’s no wonder more Australians are choosing to move here. In fact, the population is booming—currently estimated at around 376,000 in 2025, with projections suggesting it will surpass 540,000 by 2046.
But with rapid growth comes rising pressure.
As more people move to the region, the demand for housing, healthcare, mental health support, and disability services is surging. Unfortunately, many individuals and families are being left behind in the process.
A Hidden Crisis Growing in Our Backyard
Homelessness on the Sunshine Coast has increased by 54% in just five years, jumping from 785 people in 2016 to more than 1,200 in 2021. The lack of affordable housing, skyrocketing rents, and a near-zero vacancy rate have created a perfect storm for those already on the edge.
But it’s not just about housing.
Mental health conditions are rising across the region, with 8.8% of Sunshine Coast residents reporting anxiety, depression, or related challenges in the last census. And for many, support remains out of reach—especially for those who are isolated, living in poverty, or facing multiple barriers.
Disability Support Is More Vital Than Ever
As our community ages and grows, so does the number of people living with disability. In 2021, over 21,000 people on the Sunshine Coast (6.2%) needed assistance with daily living due to disability—and that number is predicted to rise as the population expands and ages.
The demand for inclusive services, peer-led support, and practical help is increasing fast. Yet government systems alone can’t keep up.
That’s where community organisations like THE !N CROWD come in.
The Power of Community
At THE !N CROWD, we believe everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and safe—no matter their story. Whether someone is facing homelessness, navigating mental health challenges, or living with disability, our mission is to walk alongside them with empathy, dignity, and practical help.
We provide meals, essential items, connection, and a hand to hold—not handouts, but pathways to hope and independence. And as the Sunshine Coast grows, so does our responsibility to make sure no one is left behind.
