The Sunshine Coast is facing a housing crisis that is leaving many individuals and families struggling to find stable, affordable homes. With rising housing costs, low rental availability, increasing economic pressures, and limited mental health support, the issue is becoming more urgent by the day.
Over the past five years, the Sunshine Coast has experienced a housing shortfall of over 7,000 homes, meeting only 61% of the growing demand. This has resulted in skyrocketing property prices and rental costs, making it increasingly difficult for low- and middle-income earners to secure housing. Competition for rentals is fierce, with many properties receiving dozens of applications, leaving vulnerable individuals with few options for stable accommodation.
The rapid population growth on the Sunshine Coast, driven by both lifestyle relocations and infrastructure projects, has further intensified the demand for housing. While the region continues to attract new residents, the housing supply has failed to keep pace, leading to affordability challenges that push many into precarious living situations or even homelessness.
Housing instability has a profound impact on mental health, yet access to mental health services in the region remains limited. Although resources like the 24-hour Mental Health Access Line exist, the lack of available beds and support systems means that individuals in crisis often do not receive the care they need. Cases like the recent incident of an 11-year-old being turned away from the Sunshine Coast University Hospital due to bed shortages highlight the ongoing gaps in support services.
Addressing this crisis requires a coordinated effort from government agencies, community organizations, and local businesses. Increased investment in affordable housing, stronger rental protections, and expanded mental health services are essential to creating a sustainable solution. At THE !N CROWD, we are committed to advocating for change and supporting those affected by the housing crisis.
