Community on Wheels – 2025 Year in Review

Restoring hope, one conversation at a time

In 2025, THE !N CROWD’s Community on Wheels program continued to roll across the Sunshine Coast, bringing more than just food and essentials to those doing it tough. With Big SAL at the heart of our outreach, we spent the year showing up in streets, parks, caravan parks, and neighbourhood centres – offering connection, dignity, and a reminder that no one has to face hardship alone.

Showing up where it matters most

Right throughout the year, Community on Wheels remained a steady and trusted presence at the Nambour Caravan Park, while also growing our reach into Maleny, Caloundra, Sippy Downs and surrounding areas.

Each visit looked a little different, but the heart was always the same:

  • Providing access to food, toiletries, clothing, bedding, baby items, and pet essentials
  • Creating a safe, judgment-free space where people could stop, chat, and feel seen
  • Giving individuals the freedom to choose what they need, rather than having it chosen for them

Big SAL isn’t just a bus – it’s a moving community hub, designed to restore a sense of positive culture in places where survival mode often takes over.

Real stories, real people, real resilience

Throughout 2025, we met and walked alongside people facing incredibly complex and deeply personal challenges:

  • Women starting again after leaving domestic and family violence, rebuilding with almost nothing
  • Individuals navigating addiction, relapse, and recovery, bravely sharing their stories
  • Community members living in cars, temporary cabins, or unstable accommodation
  • Parents doing all they can to create safety, stability and hope for their children
  • People experiencing grief, mental illness, and the crushing weight of isolation

We also celebrated the wins – the moments of light that remind us why we keep showing up:

  • A long-time friend finally receiving surgery after years on a public health waitlist
  • A community member achieving their goal of buying a vehicle and regaining independence
  • A mother beginning TAFE studies with a donated laptop, taking steps toward secure employment
  • New pets bringing comfort after loss, new housing opportunities emerging, and reconnections with family
  • Small but powerful joys: a favourite dress with pockets, a new pillow, a working blender, a shared joke that “was really needed today”

Behind every item handed out was a story, a relationship, and a person doing their best in circumstances most of us will never fully see.

Maleny – a community that welcomed the bus

One of the highlights of 2025 was the deepening of our relationships in Maleny.

Through our partnership with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, Maleny IGA, Lifeline Maleny, Orange Sky, the Salvation Army, local farmers, and the Flexi School, we were able to:

  • Share home-style cooked meals around a table with people of all ages
  • Distribute fresh, locally grown produce, toiletries and essential items
  • Support students with food and essentials for school camps
  • Hear stories from older residents about how community life used to be – from the milkman and iceman, to neighbourhood donut deliveries
  • Encourage young people who don’t fit into mainstream education but are thriving in flexible, supportive learning environments

Maleny welcomed us with open arms and generous hearts. Word of mouth quickly became our biggest connector, helping more people find their way to Big SAL each week.

More than a service – a hand to hold

One of the strongest themes this year was simple but profound:
People aren’t just coming for support items – they’re coming for connection.

Many told us they hadn’t felt genuinely checked in on for a long time. Others said they come to Community on Wheels because they feel:

  • Seen – someone remembers their name and their story
  • Heard – they can share without being rushed or judged
  • Valued – not as a “client” or “case”, but as a person

We listened to stories of trauma, loss and fear. We sat with people in their grief and their anger. We celebrated sobriety milestones, shared laughs over childhood TV shows, debated music and faith, and learned new words in other languages. We wrote referral letters on the spot to help people access housing, mental health support and other services. We walked alongside people as they took their first steps towards safer, more independent lives.

Our approach is simple: presence over programs, people over performance.
We are here to be a steady hand to hold – until people feel strong and confident enough to stand on their own.

Responding to growing need

2025 also reminded us just how heavy the load has become for many on the Sunshine Coast.

Rising cost of living, limited housing options, and increased mental health pressures have made it harder than ever for individuals and families to move out of crisis. We’ve seen:

  • More people reaching out for support and referrals
  • More complex situations, particularly around safety, mental health, and family breakdown
  • Fewer available pathways out of homelessness and hardship

In response, THE !N CROWD has continued to adapt – expanding our services, strengthening partnerships, and constantly reflecting on how we can better meet the evolving needs of our community.

“No one goes without” – our commitment into 2026

From Christmas hampers and quiet moments on the footpath and long conversations over simple meals, Community on Wheels has shown us again and again that small, consistent acts of kindness can change the trajectory of a life.

Our motto, “NO ONE GOES WITHOUT” has never felt more important.

As we move into 2026, we remain committed to:

  • Showing up consistently in the places we’re needed most
  • Holding space for honest, vulnerable conversations
  • Providing practical support that brings real relief
  • Partnering with local services and community members to build stronger pathways forward
  • Reminding every person we meet that they are not alone, and that their life has value, meaning and purpose

One person at a time, one conversation at a time, we are helping to build a Sunshine Coast where community means no one is left behind – and where everyone has the chance to feel safe, supported and included.

Because at THE !N CROWD, we don’t just believe in a community where no one goes without.
We’re out there, every week, helping to create it.
