Choosing Peace, Finding Community: A Reflection on Healthy Connection

“It’s better to be alone than surrounded by people who drain your peace — but no one should ever have to be alone.”

In a world where relationships are seen as essential to our wellbeing, it’s easy to believe that any connection is better than none. But what happens when those relationships — with family, friends, partners, or colleagues — cause more harm than healing?

At THE !N CROWD, we know that many people, especially those living with mental health challenges, disability, or homelessness, face this exact dilemma. They must choose between enduring toxic environments or stepping away to protect their mental and emotional wellbeing. It’s not an easy choice. It’s a courageous one.

And yet, walking away from harmful relationships often leads to deep and painful isolation — a silence that isn’t chosen, but felt in the aftermath of survival.

This is where our work begins.

When Walking Away Is the Healthiest Thing You Can Do

Leaving a space that hurts you — even if it once felt like home — is not a sign of weakness. It’s a powerful act of self-preservation. For many people we support at THE !N CROWD, this is a pivotal turning point: the moment they decide that peace is more important than proximity.

But the cost can be high.

You may find yourself distanced from family, disconnected from your social network, or misunderstood by others who don’t know what you’ve endured. The silence after leaving a damaging situation can feel heavier than the chaos you walked away from.

We want you to know: you are not alone in that silence. Your peace is valid. And your need for connection is just as important.

Why Being Alone Isn’t the End of the Story

There’s a difference between being alone and feeling abandoned. Choosing solitude as a step toward healing can be empowering — but it should never become a life sentence.

That’s why community matters.

That’s why THE !N CROWD exists.

We are here to meet people where they are — whether they’re just beginning their healing journey or have been walking it alone for a while. We create spaces where people are safe to show up as they are, no masks, no shame, no judgment.

We do this through:

  • Mobile outreach programs like Community on Wheels, so support reaches those who can’t access it
  • Disability services that prioritise dignity, access, and inclusion
  • Mental health awareness campaigns and creative initiatives that spark real conversations
  • Upcoming employment training and community centre spaces that offer not just services, but belonging

Because no one deserves to feel like they have to survive alone.

Generational Narratives & the Silence We Inherit

For many, the idea of “keeping things private” or “sticking it out” is inherited — passed down through generations. Shame is often deeply embedded in how families talk (or don’t talk) about abuse, mental health, addiction, or vulnerability. We are told to stay quiet, to keep appearances, to avoid conflict.

But that silence doesn’t protect us — it isolates us.

At THE !N CROWD, we are actively working to disrupt these cycles. We believe that healing is generational, just like trauma is. And the only way to break the cycle is to rewrite the story — with honesty, with connection, and with a community that walks alongside you.
